چکیده

Submitted for the MAR11 Meeting of The American Physical Society The layer-by-layer growth of ferromagnetic τ phase MnAl thin films by Bias Target Ion Beam1 YISHEN CUI, WENJING YIN, JIWEI LU, STUART WOLF, Univ of Virginia — It is well known that the metastable τ phase of MnAl has a L10 structure (chemical ordering along [001] directions) and is the only ferromagnetic phase of this binary intermetallic. In our study, alternating Al/Mn quasi-monolayer deposition was developed using a novel Bias Target Ion Beam deposition technique, that enabled precise control of the microstructural growth. We have obtained epitaxial τ phase MnAl thin films (∼10 nm thick) on single crystal MgO substrates with improved saturation magnetization and anisotropy in comparison with co-sputtered ultra thin films. We will discuss the microstructure and magnetic behaviors of MnAl films in detail. 1We acknowledge the support from DARPA. Having precise hysterics loop of thin ferroelectric and ferromagnetic layers for optical switching and optical storages are important. A hysterieses loop can be achieved from a phenomenon call the magneto-optic effect. The magneto-optic effect is the rotation of a linear polarized electromagnetic wave propagated through a ferromagnetic medium. When light is transmitted through a layer of magnet...

Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Evolution of Ta/TaNx Double Layer Thin Films Deposited by Magnetron Sputtering

Crystalline tantalum thin films of about 500nm thickness were deposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrate using magnetron sputtering. To investigate the nano-mechanical properties of tantalum films, deposition was performed at two temperatures (25°C and 200°C) on TaNx intermediate layer with different N2/Ar flow rate ratio from 0 to 30%. Nano-indentation was performed to obtain the mechani...

Band-Gap Tuning Of Electron Beam Evaporated Cds Thin Films

The effect of evaporation rate on structural, morphological and optical properties of electron beam evaporated CdS thin films have been investigated. CdS thin film deposited by electron beam evaporation method in 12nm/min and 60nm/min evaporation rates on glass substrates. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy were used to character...

Investigation of Physical Properties of e-Beam Evaporated CdTe Thin Films for Photovoltaic Application

CdTe thin films with 2.8 µm thickness were deposited by electron beam evaporation method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the films. The results of AFM analysis revealed that the CdTe films have uniform surface. CdTe thin films were heat-treated by SnCl2 solution. Structural analysis using XRD s...

Magnetism-Structure Correlations during the ε→τ Transformation in Rapidly-Solidified MnAl Nanostructured Alloys

Magnetic and structural aspects of the annealing-induced transformation of rapidly-solidified Mn55Al45 ribbons from the as-quenched metastable antiferromagnetic (AF) ε-phase to the target ferromagnetic (FM) L10 τ-phase are investigated. The as-solidified material exhibits a majority hexagonal ε-MnAl phase revealing a large exchange bias shift below a magnetic blocking temperature TB~95 K (Hex~1...
